Silver strengthens on increased buying, firm global trend

New Delhi, Oct 30, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- Silver prices rose further by 1.47 per cent in future trading today on increased buying ahead of the Indian marriage season and firming global trend.

Silver for March contract rose by 1.47 per cent to Rs 17,858 per kg on the Multi Commodity Exchange. The contract recorded a business volume of 153 lots.

The metal for the month of December contract also moved up by 1.26 per cent to Rs 17,351 per kg in trading volume of 6,224 lots.

Traders said increased buying by jewelers and retailers to meet marriage season demand mainly led to rise in silver prices.

They also said that a firming trend in the global market where silver prices traded higher by 43 cent at 10.30 dollar an ounce also supported the prices in futures trade.PTI

Gold Prices Fall as Dollar Rebounds Against Euro; Silver Drops

By Pham-Duy Nguyen

Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Gold fell the most in a week as the dollar climbed against the euro on signs that reductions in borrowing costs in Europe will lag behind the U.S. Silver slid.

The dollar rebounded after declining 2.2 percent against the euro yesterday. The Federal Reserve slashed its benchmark interest rate to 1 percent yesterday, the ninth reduction from 5.25 percent in September 2007. The European Central Bank's main lending rate is at 3.75 percent after a cut this month from a seven-year high of 4.25 percent.

``The direction of the dollar is going to dictate the price of gold and commodities,'' said Tom Hartmann, a commodity analyst at Altavest Worldwide Trading Inc. in Mission Viejo, California. ``It's going to be about who gets out of this credit crisis first. The Europeans are going to be slower in bringing down rates.''

Gold futures for December delivery declined $15.50, or 2.1 percent, to $738.50 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, the biggest percentage drop for a most-active contract since Oct. 23. The metal gained 1.8 percent yesterday.

Silver futures for December delivery fell 2 cents, or 0.2 percent, to $9.785 an ounce in New York. The metal is down 34 percent this year while gold has declined 12 percent.

Earlier, gold gained as much as 3.2 percent as the dollar dropped as much as 2.5 percent against the euro. Gold reached a record in March as the euro headed for an all-time high in July.

Rate Differentials

``It's a function of the dollar and the interest-rate differentials,'' said Matt Zeman, a metals trader at LaSalle Futures Group in Chicago.

A recession would reduce demand for all commodities, including gold, Altavest's Hartmann said. U.S. gross domestic product contracted 0.3 percent in the third quarter, the biggest decline since 2001, the Commerce Department said today.

Investment in the SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest exchange- traded fund backed by bullion, was unchanged at 749.2 tons in the past three days. It reached a record 770.6 tons on Oct. 10.

``Gold is not a blockbuster investment at this point, but it's not an awful investment,'' Hartmann said. ``It's probably not going to lose much value, but it's not going to take off anytime soon. Until we get some sign of inflation coming back or if paper currency becomes truly threatened, gold is going to stagnate.''

U.S., China kick off global round of rate cuts

By Claudia Parsons

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States and China kicked off what is likely to be a global round of interest rate cuts, part of a barrage of measures deployed around the world to fight a deep economic slowdown.

Norway also cut interest rates and Britain indicated it may lift self-imposed limits on government borrowing to counter a recession that stems from the financial crisis triggered by the collapsed U.S. housing bubble.

"The markets got the (U.S.) rate cut that they expected and a policy statement that was decidedly downbeat on the economy," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Group in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, after the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates by half a percentage point on Wednesday.

Japan may cut rates on Friday and the European Central Bank and Britain are expected to add to the monetary easing next week as authorities remain fearful that the worst financial crisis in 80 years will cause a long global recession.

U.S. regulators are finalizing a new federal program to provide up to $600 billion in government guarantees of home mortgages to help prevent foreclosures, a source familiar with the talks said. [ID:nN29488864] The program could be announced as soon as Thursday, the source said.

The International Monetary Fund approved an emergency short-term liquidity facility for emerging market economies to help them weather the credit crisis.

The Fed said the pace of U.S. economic activity appeared to have slowed markedly and it expected inflation to moderate as a result of lower energy and commodities prices.

Major U.S. stock indexes rallied more than two percent before falling back to close lower.

Analysts welcomed the move but said it had already been priced in and the outlook remains grim.

"Bigger picture, I don't think anyone believes that any interest rate cuts are going to affect the underlying issues surrounding mortgage-related and consumer-related credit," said Chip Hanlon, president of Delta Global Advisors in Huntington Beach, California.

China, increasingly appearing to be the world's last engine of economic growth, cut its interest rate to 6.66 percent from 6.93.

Norway's central bank cut rates by half a percentage point to 4.75 percent, signaling more moderate cuts ahead to help shield the oil-fueled economy from the crisis.

WORLD STOCKS RISE, DOLLAR DOWN

The interest rate cuts, and expectations of the U.S. cut, lifted world stock markets and sent the U.S. dollar plunging to its biggest one-day drop in 23 years, sparking a 7 percent surge in oil.

Japan's Nikkei index ended up 7.7 percent and European shares climbed 7.5 percent.  Continued...

Gold miners' earnings hurt by higher costs

by Steve James

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two of the world's leading gold miners reported big drops in quarterly earnings on Wednesday as soaring costs for fuel and raw materials ate into margins already narrowed by a slumping gold price.

Denver-based Newmont Mining Corp (NEM.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the world's second-largest gold producer, posted a steeper-than-expected 51 percent drop in third-quarter profit, due to decreased sales volumes and higher production costs.

South Africa's Gold Fields (GFIJ.J: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the world No. 4, posted an 86 percent fall in adjusted earnings in the September quarter, also because of lower production blamed on safety repairs and higher costs.

Gold and other mining companies have felt the effects of the recent financial market turmoil and fears of a global recession, prompting them to reconsider some capital projects and exploration.

Last week, the price of gold, traditionally a safe haven in times of economic uncertainty, fell below $700 per ounce for the first time in more than a year. It was selling for about $770 in New York on Wednesday.

"This is a problem because the smaller guys have lower costs, but the really big ounces come from gigantic open pits that are energy-intensive," said Jay Taylor, who publishes an industry newsletter, Gold, Energy & Tech Stocks.

"You're looking at a period when oil was peaking, but with an increase in the price of gold, I expect an improvement going into the fourth quarter."

"The issue for gold companies is that they are acting like ordinary equities, rather than gold stocks, and are caught up in the tidal wave of buying and selling," said Jeffrey Nichols, managing director of American Precious Metals Advisors.

"In the near-term it will continue, but if gold moves higher, which I expect in the next six months, gold shares should perform better.

"Those with higher costs will probably outperform the lower-cost producers because of the leverage they have with the gold price," said Nichols.

Newmont said its average production cost per ounce of gold rose to $480 in the third quarter, from $374 a year earlier, while the average price it received for its gold rose to $865 per ounce, from $681 a year earlier.

Gold Fields said total cash costs rose 22 percent to $617 per ounce on wage increases in South Africa and higher power tariffs in both South Africa and Ghana, and global inflation.

Newmont has blamed cost pressures for constraining development of its Boddington project in Australia, which is 85 percent completed and expected to start up in early- to mid-2009.

Also on Wednesday, Chief Executive Officer Richard O'Brien told Wall Street analysts that projects in Conga, Peru; Hope Bay, Canada; and Akyem, Ghana, are under review "until we understand the impact of the global financial crisis."

Newmont sold less gold -- 1.28 million equity ounces after 1.33 million a year earlier -- but still expects 2008 annual equity gold sales of between 5.1 million and 5.4 million ounces, with costs applicable to sales of between $425 and $450 per ounce.  Continued...

I Pupi siciliani che hanno affascinato l'artista bambino, sono diventati pendenti con brevetto mondiale, per far rivivere le battaglie, le armi e gli amori dei personaggi cavallereschi de "l'opra dei pupi"; Il satiro danzante di Mazara del Vallo, che il tempo aveva mutilato nella sua plasticit?di forme, con Sacco ritorna a danzare con una perfetta resa dei particolari;

L'antica Paestum, con i suoi antichi scavi, rivive attraverso l'interpretazione personale dell'artista, con oggetti d'arredo e gioielli che riproducono le antiche metope;

I graffiti della Val Camonica, con Sacco, diventano gioielli che sanno interpretare i gusti pi?moderni;

Fibule, monili e gioielli sapranno, come una macchina del tempo, trasportare il visitatore nell'antica Magna Grecia con i suoi miti e le sue leggende, facendo riaffiorare il mitico Olimpo sede degli antichi dei;

I gioielli in perfetto stile Arberesche: popolo albanese trapiantato in Calabria nei primi del novecento, che con i suoi ricami ispira gioielli di inusitata bellezza;

Gli argenti popolari, che attingono alla cultura contadina del mediterraneo, diventano oggetti d'arredo per le case pi?moderne e fondono, a volte, il metallo lunare con le antropomorfe ceramiche Calabresi;

I misteri degli abissi riaffiorano con la nascita del corallo, per opera del sangue di medusa, con pezzi unici dedicati al mare;

Argentium Silver Jewelry

Argentium Silver

Filed in archive jewelry techniques by Maggie MacLean on March 06, 2008

Argentium® Sterling Silver
By definition, sterling silver has 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other materials. Pure silver (fine silver) is rather soft, so adding another metal helps make sterling silver sturdier so it holds up to regular wear. Silver is typically alloyed with copper, which makes a durable and attractive blend, but it tarnishes easily.

Argentium has the same 92.5% silver, but it also has a little bit of a metal called Germanium, which makes it far more tarnish resistant than .925 sterling silver.

Working with Argentium
Argentium is more ductile (able to stretch) and malleable (able to bend without breaking) than Sterling Silver. Before using Argentium wire, you can heat it slightly to engage the tarnish resistance, and this may harden it a little as well, and make it a little easier to work with.

The Tarnish
Sterling silver tarnishes due to the presence of sulfur, which reacts with the copper. Sulfur can come from perfume, deodorant, skin, and the atmosphere. Some people tend to tarnish silver quite rapidly.

So why doesn't Argentium tarnish like sterling silver? The difference is that small amount of Germanium. It forms a thin layer of Germanium Oxide on the surface of the metal, which is almost transparent. This layer keeps the sulfur from reaching the copper, so it can't react and cause tarnish.

While this barrier layer will build up over time at room temperature, heating it will help build the protective layer faster. This is also why it's not necessary to protect Argentium from oxygen when soldering or fusing.

When Argentium does tarnish, it takes on a very soft yellow color, where .925 sterling silver forms a dark black patina. Under normal circumstances, washing with dish washing liquid and a soft brush is all that is required to keep Argentium sterling silver jewelry bright and shiny.

Just last year, beads, chains, and clasps in Argentium became available. I think it's worth the small extra expense for its strength, beauty, and its tarnish-resistant finish.

Scott Wilson Multi chain pendant necklace

10May08

Scott Wilson Multi chain pendant necklace

Scott Wilson Multi chain pendant necklace
This unique piece of Scott Wilson jewellery screams cool sophistication. It's a necklace made out of a silver mixed multi chain with an unusual pendant attractively attached to the chain with a T-bar fastening above the pendant. The pendant is so different that it's difficult to categorize it for explanation. It does, however, look stunning with its polished silver ends and chain centre. The drop of the necklace is about 37.5 cm. Scott Wilson has been called the Lord of the Rings because his designs are bold and sculptural and many feature rings in some form. Scott Wilson designs can be made out of silver like this multi chain pendant necklace, or they can be worked in 18ct gold and leather. Scott Wilson jewellery tends to be contemporary and pushes the boundaries of jewellery millinery. The designer studied jewellery design at design at Middlesex Polytechnic and millinery at the Royal College of Art. While he was studying, Scott Wilson started working with fashion houses and won a work placement with Karl Largerfeld in Paris. For Largerfeld's 1996 spring/summer show, Scott Wilson was commissioned to make mystical body and head wire pieces.

Color Theory for Fashionistias - Three Easy Steps to Perfect.

- Carrie Johnson
The Jewelry Maven

Color is everywhere, in your clothes, in your jewelry. Color is life. Fashion and color coordination can make or break your carefuly planned outfit.

Here's a bit of color theory with a fashionista bent.

Primary colors

These are red, blue and yellow. In theory, you can make any color from these three primaries (except white, which is really an absence of color). In practice, it depends on what red, blue or yellow you start with, but we are not mixing paints here, so just remember that the primary colors are red, blue and yellow. You'll learn why in the next step.

The secondary colors are the colors you get from mixing equal amounts of any two primaries. (If the primaries are pure, mixing all three will give you black.)

The secondaries are purple, orange and green.

Now why do you care?

Sterling Silver Jewelry

Well, primaries and secondaries together give us complementary colors. The complement of the color is the color directly across from it on the color wheel, or if starting with a primary, the color made from mixing the other two primaries. So essentially a color and its complement contain all of the primaries between them.

Red's compliment is green (Merry Christmas!). Yellow's complement is purple. Blue's complement is orange. This is as much contrast as you can get between colors of the same value (brightness or darkness). So if you want to make a bold statement, the primaries are a treat.

Enter the secondaries

The secondary colors are made by mixing equal parts of any two complementaries. So the secondary colors are green (yellow and blue), orange (yellow and red) and purple (blue and red).

Let's say you have a yellow dress and you want this outfit to be a traffic stopper. If it's for daytime, you can use bold purple jewelry and accessories. This classic combination of purple and yellow is eye catching. It can be sophisticated and definite or more playful, depending on the yellow and purple you start out with.

However, you don't always want to be quite that much the center of attention. What do you do to make more subtle fashion statements, but still use colors well?

The yellow and purple we used above are complementary colors. This means they are directly across from each other on the color wheel.

The colors to each side of our main color's complement are the triad colors. (Triad because the color you start with plus the two others make three colors total.) The triads are our friends for choosing jewelry or other accessories. Let's look at our yellow dress again. This time we're wearing it to a business meeting. What would be appropriate jewelry? Gold on yellow is too close -- it will tend to wash out. The whole outfit will look drab (more drab than if you didn't use the gold jewelry).

Silver will work, particularly if the silver is a bit pale and the yellow of the dress if very vivid. But you don't have to stick with gold or silver. There are many colored gems and jewels out there. Try a sapphire necklace. The blue will nicely set off the yellow and both will sparkle. Or a red brooch. The red can tend towards orange for a brighter effect or towards blue for more contrast.

Now how about the vivid purple blouse you just adore? How to accessorize it? The purple is already such a bold color. Well, we'll do exactly the opposite of what we have done with our yellow dress, since purple is yellow's complement.

For our purple blouse, if you want to be bold and outrageous, go for bright gold (yellow) or just plain yellow jewelry. Silver will not work with the purple since the blue of the silver is too close to our purple color (as the gold was on the yellow dress). Of course red is wonderful with purple, just showing that every rule is made to be broken (with discrimination and taste, of course).

We can team our purple blouse with a tan skirt (tan being a form of yellow) and dress it down for a business meeting. We'll want our jewelry to be a little more subtle. In this case, rather than yellow, let's use the triad colors to purple -- orange or green. These may seem like bold choices, but remember you want your jewelry to be seen, not to blend into the woodwork.

How about an amber pendant? This would be sophisticated and would be set off wonderfully by the purple background without being garish.

Or an emerald brooch and earrings, or a green frog pin. The possibilities are endless within your basic color choices. If you stick with these color constraints, you will not go wrong.

Now let's consider the classic grey business suit. You may be thinking that your grey suit is neutral so you can choose any color at all. This is rarely the case and can be the cause of that ensemble that doesn't quite work.

Most greys tend towards blue (cool) or red/yellow (warm). So first determine if your suit is cool grey or warm grey. If you're having trouble with this (and it can be tough at first), try holding it up to other grey items in your house. You'll start to notice that it looks a bit redder (or yellower) or a bit more blue. This will help you determine the color bias of your grey suit.

Most warm grey used in clothing is a reddish grey. This is because red complements the complexion. But you will find some yellowish greys, particularly in garments with very sophisticated color.

Let's say our suit is a cool grey, so for the purposes of our color choice we'll consider it blue. The complement of blue is orange.

We want to keep this a business suit, so we'll pick the triad to each side of the orange to start with. Red and yellow. This tells us that gold will be a perfect choice for our grey suit. Silver is too blue and would wash out the outfit.

You may have noticed that gold tends towards red or yellow. If you are using more than one accessory with the gold, determine whether the primary gold jewelry you will be wearing is reddish gold or yellow gold.

This is done just as we did with the suit itself, by comparing it with other colors.

If the gold is reddish, then keep your other accessories in the red and yellow range. If the gold if yellow, keep the other colors in the yellow orange range.

Note, the description "yellow gold" is for any gold that is not white (silvery). Yellow golds range from a deep red to a very pale yellow, so be sure to check each piece of jewelry when putting together your outfit. A red gold and a yellow gold next to each other will look subtly wrong, unless they are carefully combined in a single piece by a master jeweler. A lack of understanding about the tendencies of gold to be manifested as different colors results in fashion mistakes are that are hard to pin down.

So, let's say we've chosen a beautiful golden horse pin as our primary jewelry piece. We look at it and realize that it tends, ever so slightly, towards red. This makes the rest of our accessorizing easy.

We'll go for red and even towards the cooler reds (those tending towards purple, rather than towards the yellows and oranges). With our golden horse brooch and a deep slightly purplish red scarf our grey business suit stays business-like but acquires a powerful feminine appeal.

If you want more color, choose red's triads, blue or yellow.

So, when choosing the jewelry to complement any outfit follow three simple steps and you won't go wrong:

1) Determine the base color of your clothing. This is the dominant color. If youíre wearing the purple blouse with a tan skirt the purple is the dominant color.

If the outfit has a pattern, squint at it and try to see what color feels most dominant (this is an old artist's trick). If no particular color stands out, determine if the overall pattern is cool or warm as we did with our grey suit. Again squinting helps.

2) Find the complement of this color on your color wheel. If you really want to stand out, use the complement and stop at this step -- you're done!

3) Look at the triad colors next to the complement. These are most often the colors you will use for your accessories. If you want a brighter look you can use both triads. For a more subtle look, choose one or the other and then use variations on this color (the variations on any one color are almost endless).

That's it -- three easy steps that will assure that your outfits are always tres chic and save you hours trying to figure out what's just not quite right or choosing by hit and miss.

Of course, fashion colors change from year to year, but you now understand color combinations and how to put them together in wow combinations, whatever colors your starting with.

Coming in part two, how colors effect each other

Rosato plays "The City Collection"

Rosato plays "The City Collection"

The City Collection is the new Rosato jewelry universe, inspired to the three main fashion districts: Milan, Paris and New York. In this universe, each city becomes a perfect movie-setting for Rosato jewels; a scenery recreating different worlds and styles through symbols, colours and sensations. The famous charms are forged into gold and enhanced by colourful enamels, thus turning into a dress, a shoe, a shopping bag, a flavour and....last but not least, a gift box.

The colour, the other leit motiv of the new Rosato collection, is the sound-track for this new movie experience which invades and becomes one with every bracelet, ring or necklace. Music vibrating in many different tunes: enamels as well as coloured stones. White, pink, fum?mother of pearl, red coral, black onyx, purple amethyst...
