If the recession has done one thing, it has piled enough "manure" on the old "it's-about-me" business model to bury it. In its place, though, is now fertile soil for a new paradigm to grow and get a healthy start. Cooperation across and between related industries simply makes entrepreneurial sense; there is power in numbers that makes playing to your strengths a whole lot easier, and far more effective. The partnership between jewelry resource Lüp Rocks and fashion business educators Nolcha has recently been made public, and is definitely one to watch, if not emulate.

Lüp Rocks, founded by two hardworking networkers, Michelle Orman and Jessica Cohen, is an online costume designers/stylist/editor resource for jewelry (they have also recently added accessories, apparel, beauty, and furnishing to their roster); their members' products are often seen in productions like Ugly Betty, Cashmere Mafia, and Gossip Girls. Nolcha founded by Kerry Bannigan is a membership-based site where new fashion designers can network, find support, and seek information to strengthen their business position. There is no fee to become a member of Nolcha, but each applicant is vetted for their professional standing.

By working together, each firm hopes to accomplish more than they might if they continued to work independently. "We can drive more traffic to both sites and provide a wider range of placement opportunities for our members," explains Orman. "Nolcha can teach our jewelers to become better business people, how to navigate the fashion field, and even get their designs into Fashion Week." This kind of exposure for jewelry designers can be highly successful and enables a business to go from obscurity to famous and thriving.

Ted Muehling’s Muses Do It Lyrically

December 17th, 2008

Copyright Don Freedman from TED MUEHLING: A Portrait by Don Freeman, Text by Susan Yelavich, Rizzoli New York 2008

TED MUEHLING: A Portrait by Don Freeman illustrates one reason for wearing this much admired craftsman's aesthetic — it is, from the standpoint of wearability, among the most sensuous of ornamentation on the market today. Muehling's pieces speak to an audience of women for whom adornment is meant to enhance the human form by organic affinity rather than dramatic highlight. There is something powerful about someone who wears their jewels as simply and with the same ease as their smile.

Freeman's images are satisfyingly rich and lyrical — just as the proportions in this esthete's jewelry is nearly undefinable in perfection; why does the roundness or fullness to a pod or a stem make it feel so lush, authentic? Yet page after page of these all- encompassing images can be almost too much, in the way a rich dessert needs to be shared. This is a book to savor in small bites, and with a friend.

2009: Fade To Black…And Bring In The Bright

What do we do with black? The myriad of choices makes it seem so easy to accessorize, but somehow when you are standing in front of that mirror……well, I think we've all fought the good fight in the battle of doubt, haven't we?

There are several ways to handle that dark canvas — and you need not be Vermeer to bring light and life to it (I'm currently spending time with The Forger's Spell by Edward Dolnick, a great read about the art of forgery).

If you are following trends, then a lusty chain or two will do nicely, as will something geometrically-inclined and multi-hued. Just do not permit a necklace — or any other piece of jewelry — to precede you when you enter a room. Adding color to unrelieved black will open a window into your style personality so choose a palette that truly flatters you –or at least sends off the message you want. This is not a time to experiment with puce, just because the fashion gods, if they still exist, say so.

Personally, I'd like to see a return to individuality, and perhaps even exclusivity — no, I don't mean in the high-rent-district sense, but by selecting pieces that work only on you. It doesn't matter if you've worn that pin ten times or one hundred, freshen up the overall look by pairing it with earrings you hadn't considered before. When it comes to coordinating jewelry of varied motifs, color is a great equalizer, but so is theme. Victoriana blends well with basic contemporary pieces (simple hoop earrings or a bangle bracelet or three). Vintage silver and new silver will also work well together, even if the old pieces have a bit of tarnish, just balance the designs in way that suggests a story, like a tapestry.

The pieces I chose to illustrate this post aren't necessarily meant to work together, although, if given a few minutes I could definite work up a lovely composition. Give a thought to the things you have at hand, play around with them a little, have fun with it. In the coming year, fading to black will be just another opportunity to brighten up.

Ok, my dear jewelry fans, that's it for 2008…thank you for reading this, my labor of love, and to my regulars, thank you for your precious time and your continued consideration. The blog will look different in 2009, and there will be a few changes, but this is place where you will always find all that goes into jewel history. Happy and healthy holidays to all– xo, Lori

THOMASSABO NEWS

Rebel at Heart

In his "Rebel at Heart" series, THOMAS SABO has now transformed the rebellious heart into a key piece for the second half of the year. The heart with wings is an internationally popular tattoo design and represents all too transient love that we all try so hard to hold on to. So, love is in the air for Autumn and Winter 2008 – you just need to be willing to go out and capture it. The items of jewellery are complemented by striking, silver wings for every kind of love angel. Both male and female fans of this rocky series should be prepared for many a heart to flutter past in the second half of the year.

Take Me Higher

The stars of 2008 – the small THOMAS SABO Space Robot has been wowing a huge fan community ever since his first trip through the fashion orbit. During his last space walk, he found a new girlfriend: the Space Girl is the love of his life and will be accompanying him through fashion heaven from now on. Together, they hover through a sparkling galaxy of glamorous stars.

It-Girl in Paris

For the Autumn/Winter season, every It Girl will be surrounding herself with a certain Parisian flair. High heels, flats, platforms, clutches and a small Eiffel tower are not only très chic – they are a veritable homage to the capital of love. For all It Girls, who know how to use accessories with playful simplicity, the designer label's new series offers a true treasure trove of stylish accessories and feminine fashion attributes. Ça va, Chérie?

East Meets West

Once again, THOMAS SABO continues the synergy between Art Déco design and Asian symbolism for Autumn/Winter 2008. Whereas Spring was dominated by pink and white, we now have a focus on black with a hint of red. What sparkles in such noble and sophisticated manner is reminiscent of the golden age of Chinese lacquer work. Where once it was the preserve of kings and emperors, it's reinterpretation is now all the rage with fashionistas the world over: spectacular evening earrings, bracelets and glamorous necklaces are the new highlights of an evening on the town.

Groovy Colours

THOMAS SABO is now putting the focus on colour! The designer label is presenting a colour concept with a new seasonal line for the Sterling Silver Collection, ranging from colourful one-off pieces to expressive, attention-grabbing colour compositions. And all of this in two versions: firstly, a series, which captures the harmonious hues of an autumnal forest – dominated by low-key nuances such as champagne, coffee, opaque white and black. Secondly, a cheerful colour fest of almost hypnotic
intensity. The key pieces sparkle with a veritable explosion of colour: olive, violet, pink, red, coffee and champagne and orange – to create a beautiful colour combination that harmoniously brings together both quiet and loud shades.

A Great Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday, despite rarely getting to spend it with my only son (I get to do that at Christmas). But this Thanksgiving was special; not only did I get to spend it with my son and his wife, we went to them in Washington, D.C. and had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner at 1789 (great restaurant in Georgetown) along with other friends and my niece and her fiance. The great news: I am going to be a grandmother!!! I've never had a Thanksgiving quite like this one! My only wish is that my sister, her husband and son could have been there too (our regular Thanksgiving crew).

Although I've been busy traveling and eating good food, I do have some new pieces on the website. You can find new bracelets on the Swarovski Crystal Bracelets page and the Lampwork Bracelets page.
Today, I'm featuring 3 of the newest necklaces to hit the Cluny Grey Jewelry website. The top labradorite necklace has a pretty teardrop shaped pendant with a labradorite cabochon with plenty of flash. The second rose quartz necklace is a favorite of mine, not only because it is made with vermeil (gold), but because of the very large, rough-cut rose quartz nuggets that make up the lower sides of the necklace. The pendant is especially too: a large rose quartz cabochon with bezel-set citrines at the bottom.
Finally, the bottom necklace is made primarily of jade with a sterling silver pendant consisting of a carved flower and a prehnite cabochon. Do remember that when these are shown on display, they look longer usually than they actually are. Please ask if you need a necklace a certain length.

2008 Cannes Film Festival Opening

May 15th, 2008

mischa-barton-nlz10204.jpgThe 2008 Cannes Film Festival kicked off yesterday in Southern France with all the heavy hitters of the film industry making their appearances.

The festival is a great way to see an array of fashion from all over the world. From chic and classy to the most horrific, the Cannes Festival has it all!

Among the fabulous were Mischa Barton, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett. All wearing exquisite dresses and flashy jewelry!

You gotta love the stars and their accessories, though! Cate Blanchett's stunning circle crop earrings can easily be found with cubic zirconia stones. Eva Longoria was flashing some bling on her fingers at the festival's opening too! Now I know you can easily get the same effect with a simple cz ring. Oh! And how could you miss Mischa's gorgeous sapphire drop necklace?

All in all, I think it was a great start to a glamorous event. I'm excited to see what else will pop up during the rest of the festival. I hope to see some more great fashions and possibly some unique silver jewelry.

Skin&Micro- Jewelry

The wellbeing resulting from practising sports is indisputable .Can one wear jewellery when swimming ?During a disco-locking session or while hiking ?Frank Bonarel ,director of the select Ken Club in Paris ,notes that "wowen almost alwarys take off their fragile jewelry or pieces that could hit them when proctising their favourite exercise ."The efforts in terms of design and sophistication are ,for the most part ,concentrated on wowen's active garments and technical accessories like weights (Philippe Starck ),elastic bands or various types of ballasts.

A very exciting new product from the Italian brand Newd:the first piece of silver jewelry that is applied directly on the skin !Wherever and whenever you want-it is repositionable and water-resistant .A preciouse star or sun to place on the small of the back ,around the navel or on the arm making the active body truly sublime.A sort of "second-skin jewel" and a "soft" alternative to piercing.

Micro-jewellery continues its rise to success ,attracting consumers who want to spend 100%of their treasure.Featherweight pieces of jewellery that you almost forget you are wearing .At the last Eclat de Mode trade fair in Paris ,the young designer Marie Laure T.offered up minuscule wings in silver on a micro-ball chain .The new brand Feidt, for its part ,caters exclusively to this demand for tiny jewels, designed on themes like the Tree of Life or Yin&Yang.

BASE METALS

FORTIS/VM REPORT

Further short term metals price decline predicted, but some recovery by end-2009

The latest metals monthly report prepared by VM Group for Fortis Bank anticipates further metals price weakness in 1Q 2009 followed by at least a degree of price recovery.

Author: Rhona O'Connell
Posted:  Friday , 19 Dec 2008

LONDON -

The latest metals monthly report from Fortis/VM Group suggests that the majority of the metals markets must expect further price declines in the first quarter of next year, before a recovery that will take prices higher by year-end; although gold will be more robust.  The Group's price forecasts expect gold to be, at $850, at the same level in twelve months' time as it is now (and, for that matter, as it was twelve months ago, more or less), while looking for $12 silver, $900 platinum and $180 palladium, an increase of 13% for silver, of 6% for platinum and no change for palladium.  For the longer term the views are bearish for gold and silver, but bullish for platinum and palladium.  Recoveries are also forecast for the base metals.

On the basis that the Great Depression has been cited by some market commentators as a precedent for the current environment, although it is a minority view with economic policy generally believed to be wiser now than it was then, the review takes the opportunity to look at the performance of the metals markets during the Great Depression. It observes that almost all the metals have "already come close to or exceeded" the decline in the early 1930s, although it does note that the analysis has to look at annual figures for the earlier period, against daily figures now.  Looking at the metals on a monthly basis suggests that copper prices have more scope on the downside.  The moves have been quicker this time around, reflecting the higher speed with which markets react to external forces, accelerated by speculative money flows.

The Depression tends to be dated, in the US, from the Wall Street Crash of October 1929 through to the late 1930s and the build-up to the Second World War.  From peak to trough, which was between 1929 and 1932, the US and Canada suffered a 19% fall in GDP while that in the UK was 10%.  The US did not regain pre-1929 levels until 1940, but Europe was swifter to recover, regaining its lost ground by 1935.  Among the base metals, copper tin and zinc all bottomed out in 1932, with copper losing 68% from its 1929 peak, tin dropped by 66% from its high (1926) lead shed 65% and zinc lost 62% from their peaks, both of which had been registered in 1925.  Nickel was under producer-led price control, while aluminium, then a very small market by comparison with today, eased gradually right the way through the 1930s.

This time around the falls from the recent peaks (to 18th December) are as follows:  Nickel (8th May 2007) 81%; Zinc (24th  November 2006) 76%; lead (15th October 2007) 75%; Copper (3rd July 2008), 67%; and aluminium (11th  July 2008), 56%.

Silver and the PGMS are similar to the base metals, peaking in the mid-1920s before silver bottomed out in 1932 after a 60% fall; platinum and palladium bottomed out in 1933-34 after a fall of 77%.

The Review suggests that the extent of the current declines "fits oddly" with the economic slowdown experienced so far.  In the Great Depression, output actually contracted, with the US economy declining by 28.5% between 1929 and 1932 and Western Europe declining by 9%.  This time the UN is still looking for global GDP to grow, although by a sluggish 1.0%.  Car sales fell by 80% during the Depression; this time they are down so far by one-third - and the US Administration has devised a $17.4 billion rescue package, including loans to General Motors and Chrysler contingent on business models that show that the companies will be financially viable by March.

The study suggests that the quicker price adjustment experienced this time should lead to a quicker recovery also; this should be underscored by the rapidity with which governments have increased deficit spending and very loose monetary policy - although this may be storing up inflationary problems for the future.

The study also carried an interesting assessment of the state of the automobile market and its implications for metals' demand in the short-term, especially aluminium; and whether the crisis in the sector and the wider economy as a whole changes previous assumptions that car ownership will continue to spread around the globe.  The outlook for 2009 suggests continued weakness in sales volumes; if auto sales were to move in line with GDP then sales would increase perhaps by just 1.5% with a positive skew generated by Chinese demand; the balance of expectation, however, is that sales rates will be noticeably slower than this.  For the longer term, the study considers that the world may yet have another two decades before we attain a position of "peak internal combustion engine" demand and before new technologies eventually come to challenge the old order.

STINK BID

Cash strong MAG Silver calls hostile Fresnillo bid an attempted "take-under"

MAG Silver, which is facing a take-over bid from top silver miner and significant shareholder Fresnillo, says the bid is opportunistic and it will likely not respond to the offer until January.

Author: Susan Taylor
Posted:  Friday , 05 Dec 2008

OTTAWA (Reuters) -

MAG Silver Corp (MAG.TO) (MVG.A) scoffed on Thursday at Fresnillo Plc's (FRES.L) hostile takeover attempt, calling it a "take-under" bid because it came in below MAG's stock price from the day before.

Fresnillo, which hiked its MAG stake to 19.8 percent in October, offered $4.54 a share on Monday for the stake it does not already own. On the previous trading day, MAG stock closed at $4.75 on Amex.

Mexico's Fresnillo said the offer represented a 12.3 percent premium to MAG's 20-day average share price and that it had no intention of amending the price.

Fresnillo owns a 56 percent stake in and is operator of the Minera Juanicipio silver project in Mexico, while MAG holds the remaining 44 percent.

The world's largest primary silver producer, Fresnillo has reported that the property has 237.8 million ounces of silver.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based MAG will form a special committee to assess the bid and likely will not respond until late January, Chief Executive Dan MacInnis said in an interview.

"It's opportunistic. The commodity sector has been hammered over the last several months with liquidation at all costs, any cost. And that, I think, is what has prompted the bid," said MacInnis. "We've been beaten up badly, as has everybody. We were trading at $15 a little less than year ago."

The price of spot silver, trading at just under $21 an ounce in March, was at $9.53 on Thursday. A deepening global financial crisis, waning demand and tough credit markets have forced many miners to shut operations and delay developments.

"We have at this moment about C$58 million in the kitty, so we're in good shape actually. We're not teetering on the edge by any means," MacInnis told Reuters.

"We have more than enough money to defend ourselves, if you like, and carry out our programs, meet all of our commitments for the next three years at least."

In October, MAG said it would study its strategic options after London-listed Fresnillo, the precious metals unit of Mexico's Penoles (PENOLES.MX), bought up more shares to nearly double its stake in the company.

A special committee has compiled a short list of potential suitors, which will be discussed at the company's next board meeting on Dec. 11, MacInnis said. MAG has had "informal contact" with those companies, he added.

Raymond James analyst Bart Jaworski said Fresnillo's offer significantly undervalues MAG, calling it a "stink bid".

"We encourage long-term investors to reject the offer and buy shares of MAG-TSX on budding buyout potential and exploration at Juanicipio and Cinco de Mayo," he said in a note.

MAG, which counts Juanicipio as its key asset, expects drilling results from another vein on the property by year-end MacInnis said. It also anticipates results in the next several weeks on its Cinco de Mayo, Lagartos, and La Lorena projects in Mexico.

MAG shares were up 1.1 percent at $4.65 on Amex and ahead 3 percent at C$5.90 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Fresnillo shares gained 7 percent to 143.7 pence on the London Stock Exchange.

About Comete

The Muraro Group was set up as a business in 1975. Its founder, Lorenzo Muraro took a dream and out of it created one of the sector's strongest and healthiest production activities.

After years of work and after having affirmed the 'Lorenzo Muraro' brand as a synonym of reliability and quality, in 1996 the group took the plunge and created a direct sales network to exploit a new distribution channel working directly with retailers.

This was the beginning of the Comete adventure. Right from the start the soul of Comete were the people involved: attentive and dynamic collaborators who have worked to achieve the goal of bringing this new idea to the maximum levels resulting in Comete being present all over Italy and now also abroad.

In just a few years a structure has been set up numbering approximately 100 production staff and a sales network of 36 exclusive representatives.

Courage and enterprise have been the group's constant strong points: a desire to aim for the top with investment in far-reaching publicity on a national level and a continual search for new ideas, the ability to always invent new products that are suitable for all, capable of identifying the Comete brand and those who wear it and the desire to create a solid, continuative relationship with its clients.

The dynamism, the search of new challenges and horizons are a constant in the history of the group: 2006 has seen the birth of a new brand, Ambrosia, that has started an experiment of sensory marketing, only in his/her kind.

Too Hot Jewelry

Too Hot Jewelry
This ice is hot - literally - or at least it was at one time.

Now it's all legal like and up for auction by the Phoenix police.

Yes, that's right. Some of this jewelry was stolen at some point. Some, however, was just bought with blood money - no biggie.

From Surprise your Valentine with stolen jewelry:

Phoenix police have authorized the auction of stolen jewelry this Saturday - just in time for Valentine's Day. Auction spokeswoman Jacque Weiner said the gift of stolen jewelry can spice up any relationship.

[...] Doors will open at 9 a.m. at Auction Systems Auctioneers & Appraisers, where nearly 800 lots will be auctioned to the highest bidders starting at 10 a.m. An auction catalog is available at www.auctionANDappraise.com.

Weiner said bidding on some items will start at $10. She said the most expensive item will probably be a 10-karatlinks men's watch from Benny & Co. that has been appraised at $16,900. Weiner said this item will probably be sold for less than $5,000.

She said the discount prices should erase any stigma associated with police auction jewelry linked to the criminal underworld.

"The savings will take away any blemish," she said.

Besides the Benny & Co. watch, items on sale include jewelry in platinum, gold and silver, and diamonds in nearly every size, shape and color. Costume and fashion jewelry will also be auctioned, along with vintage pocket watches and art deco pieces.

You can view and even bid on some of this hot jewelry at Auction Systems. Here are a few more pieces I found on their site.

Silver Jewelry Trend Report

Silver Jewelry Trend Report
According to Mine Web, the Silver Institute has just published a trend report on silver, especially targeting jewelry, and things look pretty good for silver jewelry. This is really not a huge surprise since, while the cost of silver has gone up a good deal over the last year or so, you still can't beat silver as the most economical metal for jewelry these days. Really, everything has gone up, silver, gold, and platinum.

From Silver Institute publishes GFMS global silver jewelry analysis report:

The Silver Institute Thursday released a detailed analysis on trends in the global silver jewelry market conducted by London precious metals consultants GFMS.

The study found that silver jewelry consumption is still heavily skewed towards western markets, which pushed fabrication higher in top jewelry manufacturing centers Thailand, Italy and China. In 2005 silver jewelry accounted for one-fifth of total jewelry fabrication and 19% of international silver demand.

Globally, twice as much silver as gold ends up in jewelry while demand for these two metals dwarfs platinum and palladium, according to the study. "Taking all four precious metals together, silver's share of total precious metals jewelry volume increased from 60.5% in 1999 to 65.6% in 2005."

However, GFMS's research discovered large differences in the ratio of silver: gold jewelrylinks consumption on an individual country basis.

While gold was by far the dominant precious metal on a value basis, GFMS suggested that "in reality, and in particular at the retail level, silver holds its own rather better in the value stakes due to the much higher markups on silver than on gold, platinum or palladium jewelry.

Finally…Sex and the City!!

May 30th, 2008

photo01.jpgGrab the girls and put on your Carrie necklaces cause tonight is the night to finally see the Sex and the City movie!

I know you have all been waiting to see Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte on the big screen, so wait no more! These four lovely ladies are anticipated to blow audiences away with their sensational stories and style.

From Carrie's bold flower patterns to the simple and innocent style of Charlotte, this movie definitely caters to all the women of the world and their unique tastes in fashion and jewelry. With strands of pearls, beautiful silver jewelry, and flashy cocktail rings, it's hard not to see something you'll like.

And for every girl who wishes for their white wedding day, I think the gown that Sarah Jessica Parker wears is straight from a fairytale, complete with simple pearl stud earrings…but maybe not the feather head piece .

Back to the days of nameplate necklaces, the good luck horseshoe pendant, and bold Samantha chandelier earrings, the Sex and the City girls have consistently brought unique and flavorful (though sometimes awful!) flare to the screen.

So, who else is in for a girls night out?!

Get Smart Cutie!

June 30th, 2008

anne-hathaway-06170802.jpgGorgeous Anne Hathaway graces the silver screen again in the new hit Get Smart. I've enjoyed watching Anne develop her talent and style over the years. Nothing on this girl is an understatement and her image is purely classic.

The star of the hit red carpet premier of the movie wearing a stunning grey Bill Blass dress, black Christian Louboutin heels, and some sparkling bling! Everything speaks volumes and she's not shy to show off her elegance - quite the opposite for Steve Carrell's Maxwell Smart character.

From the dress to the shoes and the accessories, Anne's style is easily, and affordably, achievable. Sparkling drop earrings and fashionable cocktail rings are easy looks to copy and can be found on sites like Eve's Addiction.com. I love how easy it is to achieve any celeb style jewelry!

The Willis Legacy

August 22nd, 2008

27013_rumer_willis_vcbcvbcb00029_122_1196lo.jpgThe past decade has seen Rumer Willis slowly building on the Willis legacy in Tinsel Town. She's started to broadened her career by playing a university sorority girl in the new movie The House Bunny. Probably not the most glamorous movie, but everyone has to start somewhere.

This past week at the LA premier for the movie, Rumer showcased her class and elegence with a sleeveless black satin Reem Acra gown, revealing her slender arms with a simple cubic zirconia bubbles tennis bracelet.  Her new stylish short haircut also nicely framed her cubic zirconia drop earrings.
As the daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Rumer has inherited an interesting look that is both unique and beautiful, and her style is extremely noticeable.
The movie may tank, but I think Rumer Willis is one to watch as she establishes herself within the ranks of her famous parents. She may not reach their notoriety, but she's got the ingredients to gain some notice. What say you?

The Museum of Arts and Design - 800 Pieces of Silver

The Museum of Arts and Design, formerly known as the American Craft Museum, has received a donation of 800 pieces of silver jewelry, The Associated Press reported. The jewelry, designed by indigenous and ethnic artisans from around the world during the 20th century, is a gift from Daniel and Serga Nadler. The New York couple collected the pieces over 30 years during trips to many countries including China, Egypt, India, Mexico and Myanmar.

The museum described the collection as "one of the most comprehensive holdings of tribal, ethnic and contemporary jewelry in the world." The museum will present highlights from the collection as part of the exhibition, "Forward Thinking: Building the MAD Collection," beginning Sept. 27, when the museum opens at its new home at 2 Columbus Circle.br>

2008 MTV VMA Awards

September 8th, 2008

christina1.jpgMTV still has music videos? Who would believe it?!

With all the reality shows MTV has, they still managed to pull off the 2008 VMA awards last night.

As always, some of the hottest celebs and trendsetters were seen on the red carpet. Those who suffered ultimate embarrassment last year made a fashionable and tasteful appearance last night. Some styles were just outlandish, while others were unique and classy.

Having found her way back to great physical shape, Ms. Britney Spears looked pretty hot in a vintage Versace dress, Jimmy Choo shoes, and a sparkling tennis bracelet. Her opening may not have been as grand as it was hyped up to be, but at least she didn't make a complete fool of herself.

Katy Perry definitely takes the cake for weird with her vintage ensemble and silver jewelry.  But you can't blame the girl for wanting to show off her legs.

I think my favorite celeb would be Christina Augilera. Motherhood did not hurt this lady's sense of style. With a Robert Cavalli dress and a lot of black onyx and silver jewelry, the recent mom flamed up the red carpet, but was the dramatic eye make really necessary?

In my opinion, the VMAs are becoming more of a celebrity circus show than an awards show…or maybe it has always been that way…

Lauren Conrad Collection

September 19th, 2008

untitled.jpgLauren Conrad has hit it big with her new namesake fashion collection. The Hills star has recently debuted her Fall 2008 collection in New York at Bloomingdale's where customers went wild over the designs.

Full of cute tops, skirts, and wraps, the Lauren Conrad Collection is trendy and hip, but horribly overpriced. Once again, a celebrity fashion line with a celebrity price tag.

I will give the reality star this, she has a nice eye for design. Saying that she will be expanding her collection to handbags and accessories, I'm excited to see what celebrity style jewelry she will put out. Last year she was seen with the Carrie Bradshaw nameplate necklace and she does love her bangle bracelets. No matter what, her accessory collection will be as trendy and popular as her clothing line.

I'm looking forward to see what she will be wearing for the Emmy Awards this Sunday - which should be of her own design.

What say you - does Lauren Conrad have a promising career as a fashion designer?lauren-conrad.jpg

2008 60th Emmy Awards…

September 25th, 2008

mariska-hargitay-724674.jpg… and it was all yellow!

The red carpet for the 60th Emmy Awards this weekend was full of bright colors and sweeping gowns. Most of the illustrious starlets sported up-dos, showing off a lot of shiny, sparkly jewelry. I noticed a lot of drop earrings and teardrop shaped earrings, and of course some gorgeous diamond layered necklaces.

What really grabbed my attention were the ladies dressed in yellow. Set in contrast to the red carpet in the bright Cali sun, teri-hatcher-731465.jpgMariska Hargitay, Terri Hatcher, and Saffron Barrows were easy to spot and looking gorgeous!

With a sweeping over the shoulder dress accented with gold chandelier earrings (which can easily be achieved with a pair of gold vermeil earrings), Mariska looked goddess-like. Both Saffron and Terri wore their hair down, but they accessorized their form fitting yellow gowns with simple sparkling bangle bracelets and diamond tennis bracelets (I suggest finding the right cubic zirconia tennis bracelet  for your own yellow dress). The saffron-burrows-733663.jpgyellow set them apart from everyone else, making everything all sunshiny happy!

My only question is: What was Phoebe Price thinking when she walked out the door in that fiery number of hers?

Brazing and Soldering

Brazing and Soldering

Because of health concerns, lead is being replaced by silver in solder.

Silver facilitates the joining of materials - called brazing when done at temperatures above 600 degrees Celsius and soldering when below - and produces naturally smooth, leak-tight and corrosion-resistant joints. Silver brazing alloys are used widely in applications ranging from air-conditioning and refrigeration to electric power distribution. It is also used in the automobile and aerospace industries.

Silver brazes and solders combine high tensile strength, ductility and thermal conductivity. Silver-tin solders are used for bonding copper pipe in homes, where they not only eliminate the use of harmful lead-based solders, but also provide the piping with silver's natural antibacterial action. Major faucet manufacturers also use silver-based bonding materials to incorporate these advantages. Refrigerator manufacturers use silver-based bonding materials to provide the ductility required for constant changes in temperature of the cooling tubes.

Because of health concerns, the traditional 63 percent tin/37 percent lead solder used to build electronic equipment is quickly being replaced by a combination of silver, tin and copper solder. The movement was boosted by the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) legislation that applies throughout the European Union (EU). The law bans all products containing more than a trace amount of lead, mercury, cadmium and several other hazardous substances. Although the laws apply only to EU countries, it is being felt worldwide as companies move to a safer solder.
