Mickey Rourke - Oscar's Jewelry Star

If you think Angelina Jolie's emeralds were the most talked about jewelry statement on Oscar night, think again. Mickey Rourke might not have won the Academy Award, but he won our hearts with his adorable silver choker featuring a picture of his beloved Chihuahua, Loki, who died earlier in the week.

Rourke told red carpet reporters, "She left me at a time where, after 18 years, she knew I'd be alright. It's bittersweet because I said to myself, 'I'd rather have Loki another two years than an Oscar', and I told her that, but she stayed here as long as she could."

New York-based jewelry designer, Betina Wassermann, created the piece after hearing the sad news that the nominee's beloved Chihuahua had died (she recently lost a dog herself). The pendant is made by soldering Loki's image between two pieces of glass with Silvergleem lead-free solder and costs only $30, according to Wasserman's Etsy page.

But that wasn't Rourke's only Oscar night accessory. He bedazzled his Jean Paul Gautier cream tux jacket with a chunky gold pinky ring, a series of glittering gold and black beaded chains and of course his infamous gold tooth for good measure. And Mickey's after party garb was just as show stopping, with a cowboy hat, a shimmering skull ring, and a beer to keep Loki company.

While we were all rooting for the Comeback Kid to take home the gold on Oscar night, there is a happy ending to this underdog tale. Rourke announced that he is adopting a new Chihuahua to keep him company. And he's naming him Oscar.

Take a Jewel-Studded Carpet Ride

Unique diamonds and gemstones are always popular auction items, but the world hasn't seen them quite like this before. Sotheby's is holding its first-ever auction in Doha, Qatar on March 18th, and a jewel-studded carpet made entirely of diamonds, pearls, rubies and emeralds is the glittering centerpiece.

The captivating carpet comes from northwest India, and could fetch as much as $20 million according to Sotheby's Deputy Chairman for Europe and Asia, Henry Howard-Sneyd.

"Crafted in the 1860s as a gift for the tomb of the Prophet Mohammad in Medina, Saudi Arabia, the carpet was created under the auspices of Gaekwar Kande Rao, the maharajah of Baroda, a former kingdom in northwest India that is now part of Gujarat state."

The carpet took hundreds of craftsmen over five years to complete, and they used over two million seed pearls and colored stones to create the stunning swirled rose design.

While most auction houses are hoping to sweep their lackluster earnings "under the rug" this year, Sotheby's hopes the recent drop in oil prices won't deter the Middle Eastern region's wealthy from their doorstep.

The swift economic downturn has certainly felt like someone "pulled the rug out from under us", so perhaps this intricate piece is the perfect symbol of a gem-filled bygone era.

Hong Kong Again Ranked World's Freest Economy

Hong Kong remains the world's freest economy, for the 12th year in a row, according to the findings of the Fraser Institute of Canada's "Economic Freedom of the World: 2008 Annual Report".

The report ranks 141 economies on policies that support economic freedom. Hong Kong has held top place since the annual survey was started, and it pays tribute to the city's commitment to free trade and open markets, and the elimination of barriers to trade and investment.

The findings take into account the size of government; legal structure and security of property rights; access to sound money; freedom to trade internationally; and regulation of credit, labour and business. The city scored 8.94 out of 10, overall and was ranked first for freedom of international trade, scored 9.5 and size of government, scored 9.13.

All these factors make Hong Kong very attractive to companies around the world that invest in or trade with the SAR.

Speaking at a dinner in Hong Kong organised by the Fraser Institute, Hong Kong's Chief Executive Donald Tsang said that the city and the institute shared a passion of "unswerving commitment to free trade and open markets, and the elimination of barriers to trade and investment".

Mr Tsang highlighted a number of reasons for Hong Kong being an attractive proposition of inward investment. "Low and simple tax, a trusted legal system, clean and efficient government, a level playing field for business, a freely convertible currency, and the free and unfettered flow of information, goods and capital are all vital ingredients," he noted. "Our principle is 'Big Market, Small Government'. We aim to contain public spending at below 20 percent of GDP as far as possible. This fiscal year we expect it to come down to 19 percent of GDP. The less government contributes to GDP, the more that is left for the private sector to do."

The Fraser Institute is an independent economics and public policy think-tank; it first published the report in 1996. The current report ranked Singapore and New Zealand in second and third places, respectively. The institute's findings reflect those of the Washington-based Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal, which compile the Index of Economic Freedom, which Hong Kong has topped for 15 consecutive years.

A partnership destined for great jewellery

Design duo Jose Rodriguez Caro and Jose Luis Medina de Corral –also known as Victorio & Lucchino –are certainly among Spain's favorite sons. And why not :they have ,through their exceptional talent and hard work ,become leading figures in the local fashion scene,and have done their country proud by serving as Spain's major fashion ambassadors on numberous occasions.

Caro, born and raised in Palma Del Rio in Cordoba, in his younger years was inspired by Parisian designers who graced the pages of Spanish fashion magazines. Seville-born Del Corral meanwhile , very much like Caro, knew even at a young age that he was destined for fashion design.

SNAG Launches the New Metalsmith: Redesigned by Renowned Designer Luke Hayman of Pentagram

The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) launches its newly redesigned magazine, Metalsmith, in January 2009.

The fresh, bold format was designed by celebrated graphic designer, Luke Hayman, of Pentagram, working closely with Metalsmtih editor Suzanne Ramljak.

The magazine's new incarnation is as smart and seductive as the works regularly featured on its pages.

The award-winning Metalsmith has been the critical forum for the studio jewelry and metals fields for nearly three decades.

Boasting a provocative new size and added editorial departments, such as "In Fashion," the publication will expand its aim to engage a broader audience and showcase content as layered and dynamic as the field itself.

Metalsmith's redesign coincides with SNAG's 40th anniversary.

"Metalsmith's last major redesign was ten years ago, and it was time to reinvigorate the magazine," said Dana Singer, SNAG Executive Director.

Grown Furniture: Pudelskern Exhibits at Salone Satellite

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile - designers' paradise and sanctuary to believers in beauty - opens its halls in April.

Pudelskern Space Agency will present objects of pure and natural wool to the watching world.

For Pudelskern "design is not only about form, colours and style."

Their presentation at Salone Satellite will explore possibilities of sustainable development through design.

The whole process of production is explored, twisted and taken apart to bring forth new objects.

Pure natural wool from sheep bred on green alpine pastures in remote valleys of the Tyrol is the common denominator for this year's pieces by Pudelskern Space Agency - all of them shown for the first time to the public.

The design team analyzed the processing of the material from shearing the sheep to the manufacturing of traditional rugs.

Intervention at different stages of the process refined existing products and new products were developed from half-finished materials.

Unexpected application combined with a new technology of absolutely natural coating, making the wool flame resistant and protected against moth infestation, unlocks unopened doors for the use of the age-old material.

The exhibition will comprise of lamps, lounge chairs, a table and two rugs.

Joey Cheung Lai Yee Wins International Jewellery Design Excellence Award

The Champion of the Champions prize at the International Jewellery Design Excellence Award (IJDE), which debuted last night at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, went to designer Joey Cheung Lai Yee for "Eternity Blooming."

The "Splendour of Jewels" was the theme of last night's IJDE Award presentation ceremony, which took place at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong.

The IJDE Award is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association, the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association and the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China.
